Jennifer Longdon: Reproductive Healthcare Champion

My Position

Abortion is healthcare. Healthcare is a fundamental right. Access to abortion must remain safe, private, and accessible to all.

Read my statement on the SCOTUS decision overturning Roe v. Wade.

I’ve been fighting to preserve access to safe abortion for decades. I marched in protest against the Hyde Amendment in the 1970s and served as an abortion clinic escort.

My Legislative Record

I have supported every bill introduced to protect access to safe abortion and opposed every bill that sought to limit rights to abortion or bodily autonomy. Most recently, I opposed SB1457 and SB1164.
I opposed SB1457, which sought to “co-opt the notion of disability rights to dismantle reproductive rights”:
I opposed SB1164, which severely restricted safe access to abortion after 15 weeks:
Additionally, I am proud to be an Amicus Curiae in support of plaintiffs in Isaacson v. Brnovich, No. 21-16645 (9th Cir.), filed in response to the passage of SB1457. As we stated in our brief, SB1457 sought to “co-opt the notion of disability rights to dismantle reproductive rights. But in invoking disability rights for this end, the State fails to recognize that both the disability rights movement and the reproductive justice movement are united in the pursuit of autonomy, dignity, equality, and self-determination.”

Facts about Abortion Access in a Post-Dobbs Arizona

Of the nine abortion providers in Arizona, at least eight have ceased performing medical and surgical abortions.

Most Republicans take the position that most, if not all, abortions are now illegal in Arizona. For example, current Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich asserts that the pre-statehood law, A.R.S. 13-3603, with its complete ban except to save the life of the pregnant person, governs.

Interim Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell asserts that abortion is now illegal in most circumstances in Arizona, whether based on the pre-statehood near-total ban or the SB1164 ban against on abortions after 15 weeks.

The future of safe access to abortion and reproductive healthcare in Arizona depends on who we elect to our state legislature and our state attorney general and county attorney offices.

Abortion Rights are Disability Rights

Simply put, our fight for abortion rights must include people with disabilities. My work focuses on centering the most marginalized people – disabled people of all races, abilities, religions, economic statuses, geographic locations.

Abortion Resources

Note that in a post-Dobbs environment, available resources are changing rapidly.

  • Abortion Finder is a nonprofit organization that links abortion seekers with services.
  • Emergency contraception (sometimes called the morning after pill or Plan B) is still available from many retailers and online.
  • Plan C provides up-to-date information on how people in the U.S. are accessing at-home abortion pill options online.
  • Abortion Fund of Arizona offers a helpline for people seeking information at 602-327-5166 and helpline@abortionfundofaz.org.
  • Indigenous Rising provides support to Indigenous people who seek an abortion in the US.

Additional Resources

The repeal of Roe can be traumatizing and triggering for many, especially those facing an unplanned pregnancy. People facing an unwanted pregnancy are at higher risk of experiencing domestic violence.
